The best short treks starting from Kathmandu, from a three-day valley rim hike to Helambu and Langtang, with no domestic flight needed.

The short answer

With three days, walk from Nagarkot to Chisapani. With about a week, choose Helambu. With ten days, go to the Langtang Valley, which is the closest big-mountain trek to Kathmandu. All of these can be reached by road, so you avoid the uncertain flights to Lukla.

Day hikes if you've only got a day

You can reach Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park from the edge of the city, with forest paths and views over the valley. You'll pay a park entry fee, and it's sensible to go with a guide, as the UK government advises against trekking alone. Check the current rules for this area before you go.

Nagarkot to Chisapani

This short walk along the rim of the Kathmandu Valley links two viewpoints through Newar and Tamang villages and forest. You drive to Nagarkot through Bhaktapur, walk to Chisapani the next day, and descend to Sundarijal for a short drive back. It's a good choice for families or as a warm-up for a longer trek.

Mountain views depend on the weather. Autumn and winter mornings usually give you the best chance.

Helambu

Helambu starts right at the park gate near the city. The route climbs through Chisapani and Kutumsang to the high ridge at Tharepati, and goes on through Hyolmo Sherpa villages like Melamchi Gaon and Tarke Ghyang. It stays below about 3,700 m, so altitude is less of a concern, but expect many ups and downs.

It's a good option in spring, autumn and on clear winter days.

Tamang Heritage Trail

If you'd like culture along with your mountain views, try this trail near the Tibetan border. You drive to Syabrubesi, then walk through Gatlang, Tatopani and Briddim, staying in simple lodges and homestays. Hot springs and big views of Langtang and Ganesh Himal are highlights.

Ruby Valley

This quiet route below Ganesh Himal crosses Pangsang Pass, at about 3,850 m, on its way through Tamang and Gurung villages. Facilities are basic and few trekkers come here, which is exactly why some people like it.

Langtang Valley

Langtang is the closest big-mountain trek to the capital. You walk from forest to alpine pastures below Langtang Lirung, ending at Kyanjin Gompa with its cheese factory and monastery. From there, you can climb Kyanjin Ri, at about 4,773 m, for a superb view.

The 2015 earthquake hit this valley very hard, and local families have since rebuilt. Staying in their lodges directly supports them.

Getting to the trailheads

Road trips can take much of a day. The drive to Syabrubesi, in particular, is long and rough, and the UK government warns that mountain roads carry real risks, especially in the monsoon. It advises against night travel and overcrowded buses. A private jeep or a reputable tourist vehicle is often the better choice, even though it costs more.

Which is right for you?

  • Just a long weekend: Nagarkot to Chisapani.
  • A first proper trek, about a week: Helambu.
  • Village life and homestays: Tamang Heritage Trail.
  • Fewer trekkers: Ruby Valley.
  • The biggest mountain experience: Langtang Valley.

When to go

Spring and autumn are the best times for all these routes. Lower ones can also work on clear winter days, but higher ground may get snow. We wouldn't choose the monsoon, because of leeches, rain and landslides. See our season guide.

Permits

Routes in the Langtang area generally need a national park permit, while Shivapuri has its own entry fee. TIMS requirements have been reported differently by different sources, so see our permit guide and ask your operator.

What to pack for a short trek

  • Comfortable boots you've already worn in
  • Warm layers, because evenings can get cold even at moderate heights
  • A rain jacket, as weather changes quickly in the hills
  • Sunscreen, a sun hat and sunglasses
  • A way to treat your drinking water
  • Rupees in small notes, for tea and snacks on the way

How to fit a trek into your trip

Short treks are easy to combine with other plans. A common trip is a few days of heritage sites in Kathmandu, a three-to-eight-day trek, and then some rest in Pokhara or a safari in Chitwan. Our Kathmandu guide can help with your city days. If you can, leave a spare day between your trek and your international flight, since road delays are common.

Staying in villages

On these routes you'll often stay in family-run lodges and homestays. Rooms are basic, but you'll get a real sense of everyday life. A few good habits help: take off your shoes when asked, dress modestly, ask before you photograph people, and try to eat what's being cooked locally. Money you spend in these villages goes directly to the people who live there, which matters especially in areas that were hit by the 2015 earthquake.

Common questions

Can I trek from Kathmandu without any vehicle?

Almost. Helambu starts at Sundarijal, a short drive from the city, and some people extend walks on the valley rim from there.

What's the shortest trek with real Himalayan views?

Nagarkot to Chisapani if the weather's clear. For closer views, you'll need to go to Langtang.

Do I need to worry about altitude on these treks?

On Langtang and Ruby Valley, yes, because they go high. Read our altitude sickness guide. It's much less of a concern on the valley rim.
