  • Sinja Valley history
  • Pine and spruce forest

Overview

A quiet journey in far-western Nepal to the country's largest lake, surrounded by pine and spruce forest.

Rara Lake lies at about 2,990 m in Nepal's smallest national park. Its calm blue water and wooded hills feel very different from the high Himalaya.

The route from Jumla crosses forested ridges and Ghurchi Lagna Pass, about 3,480 m, through Thakuri and Malla-era villages. Few trekkers come here, so facilities are basic.

A Rara National Park permit is required. Flights to Jumla depend on the weather.
