Overview
Discover the Mithila culture of the eastern plains, centred on the grand Janaki Temple and the region's vivid folk art.
Janakpur is the historic heart of Mithila and is closely tied to the Ramayana story of Sita and Ram. Its white marble Janaki Temple is among the finest buildings in Nepal.
You also see Ram Mandir, sacred ponds and Mithila painting, a women's art form that decorates homes and is now well known around the world.
Visit outside the hottest months. Vivah Panchami, usually around late November or December, is the biggest festival.
