Overview
Nepal's great loop through changing landscapes, from rice terraces to the high desert of Manang, crossing Thorong La at 5,416 m.
The Annapurna Circuit passes through a remarkable range of landscapes and cultures, starting in subtropical valleys and climbing north into Tibetan-influenced villages behind the Himalaya.
The crossing of Thorong La, at 5,416 m, is the highlight and the challenge. Roads now reach parts of the old route, so this itinerary drives the lower sections and walks the best of the rest. Muktinath, a pilgrimage site for Hindus and Buddhists, follows the pass.
An Annapurna Conservation Area permit is required. A rest day in Manang is important for safe acclimatization.
