Overview
Walk through Gurung villages and bamboo forest into the Annapurna Sanctuary, a high ring of peaks that surrounds you at base camp.
This is one of Nepal's most loved treks. It climbs from terraced farmland through rhododendron forest up the narrow Modi Khola gorge into the Annapurna Sanctuary, an amphitheatre of peaks at 4,130 m.
You sleep at the foot of Annapurna I with Machhapuchhre, the Fishtail, above you. Many stone steps make it tiring, but the altitude is lower than Everest and the trip takes less time.
An Annapurna Conservation Area permit is required. Avalanche risk can close the upper gorge after heavy snow, so follow your guide's advice.
